  • Important Article: Sojourner Truth, The Libyan Sibyl by Harriet Beecher Stowe – According to the Sojourner Truth website, Stowe, who had published the bestselling Uncle Tom’s Cabin in 1852 was visited by Truth the following year. “Stowe apparently saw Truth as a primitive original, fitting the ex-slave into her romanticized view of blacks in general.” After describing Truth to sculptor William Wetmore Story, Story used Stowe’s vision of Truth as the basis for his statue, “The Libyan Sibyl.” This article by Stowe describes her 1853 meeting with Truth and how the sculpture came to be. The newspapers picked up on it and began referring to Truth as the “Sibyl” afterwards.

Because of this article this issue is one of about a dozen issues of The Atlantic Monthly singled out as notable by Dr. Steven Lomazow in his indispensible volume, American Periodicals: A Collector’s Manual and Reference Guide.
