1937/04/10 — Cover illustrated by Howard Butler

    Contents as follows:
    SHORT STORIES:

  • “Loser’s End” by Matt Taylor and illustrated by Jon Whitcomb
  • “Mountain of Gold” by Sidney Herschel Small and illustrated by Earl Crodrey
  • Each of the following two stories would very soon be made into a couple of the most popular films of the late 1930’s, one being one of the greatest Westerns of all-time, the other being a very strong screwball comedy:

  • “Stage to Lordsburg” by Ernest Haycox and illustrated by Ronald McLeod
This story is the basis for John Ford’s Stagecoach, one of my all-time favorites, starring John Wayne (greatest film entrance ever, perhaps?). You can check the imdb page to confirm this is the same story. Great find!
  • “Bringing Up Baby” by Hagar Wilde and illustrated by Earl Oliver Hurst
This one was a surprise, but turn the page after Stagecoach and you come to “Bringing Up Baby”, soon made into a classic screwball comedy of the same name starring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant. Here’s the imdb page for that classic as well.
  • “The Devil’s Song” by Harold Lamb and illustrated by Dan Sweeney
  • “A Matter of Sentiment” the short short story by Frederick Hazlitt Brennan and illustrated by Robert O. Reid

  • “Six Golden Angels” — Part 1 — by Harold Lamb and illustrated by Harry Morse Meyers
