1957-04-10 The Sporting News Baseball Magazine Contents

1957/04/10 — ITEM DESCRIPTION: Oversized, appx. 11-3/4″ X 16-1/2″ classic The Sporting News issue printed on newsprint. The image at the left is a cropped out portion of the cover (too large to fit the whole thing on my scanner!) and there are other images below from inside this issue. Classic Sporting News from when it was “The Baseball Paper of the World”!

There is just too much packed into each issue of The Sporting News to list it all, but I have paged through this entire issue and here are some of the highlights:

  • In “Landmark” by Willard Mullin a tall Yankee stands with each foot on a rock as a ship with “A.L.” marked on its sail comes through underfoot … Colossus of Rhodes reference I suppose. Accompanied by article “Yankees Sure Shots? Not in Casey’s Book”
  • “Pension Payoff Train Picks Up Speed: Many Eligibile for Checks at 10-Year Mark” is also a cover story
  • “Will Herb Score Be Greatest Lefthander?” articles also includes a Lou Darvas cartoon showing Score plus Herb Pennock, Eddie Plank, Lefty Grove, and Carl Hubbell
  • “Joe Judge Enjoys Stake in Pension Because of Bobo” Newsom
  • “Watch Me This Year Says Determined Ted” is about Ted Williams with photo of him with Jim Piersall and Jackie Jensen and article about how the fans’ boos “Stir Me Up to Best Efforts”
  • Another Ted Williams article about an apology issued over some comments he made relating to the Marines
  • Gene Mauch
  • “Changes Needed in Reserve Pact? Two Reps Differ: Yes Asserts Roberts, No Says Yost and also “Too Much Emphasis on Pension, Too Little on Game Itself” says Robin Roberts
  • Casey Stengel waits for Mickey Mantle & Don Larson to hit full stride, cools buildup of Tony Kubek
  • Frank Bolling tabbed as best Tiger Second baseman since Gehringer
  • “I’ll Be Back and Lead NL in Homers” vows Dick Stuart
  • Carl Erskine
  • Curt Simmons
  • Gus Zernial
  • Hank Soar “Denies Umpires Give Breaks to Ted or Mickey: Strike Calls the Same for All Batters”
  • Very nice full-page Motorola ad featuring Bob Feller
  • Jim Rivera switched to First base
  • Milt Graff
  • Brooks Lawrence
  • Dick Drott throws 2-hitter
  • Plus Regular Columns, Minor League Reports, Exhibition Game Boxscores, and more.
  • 40 pages total.
