1957-02-20 The Sporting News Baseball Magazine Contents

1957/02/20 — ITEM DESCRIPTION: Oversized, appx. 11-3/4″ X 16-1/2″ classic The Sporting News issue printed on newsprint. The image at the left is a cropped out portion of the cover (too large to fit the whole thing on my scanner!) and there are other images below from inside this issue. Classic Sporting News from when it was “The Baseball Paper of the World”!

There is just too much packed into each issue of The Sporting News to list it all, but I have paged through this entire issue and here are some of the highlights:

  • Spectacular Willard Mullin cartoon of Ted Williams on the front cover with article below “Ted Tops All-Time Pay Parade”
  • After Ted Williams gets $100,000 article speculates on a $125,000 player and names Mickey Mantle as possibility

  • “Majors Put More Mileage in Training Season — Coast-to-Coast Road Shows Scheduled for Four Teams”

  • “Newest NL Umpire Got Start Through Ad in The Sporting News” is about Ken Burkhart
  • “Tigers Tried for Year to Buy Dittmer”
  • Long 2-page feature on Harry Hooper with headline “Hooper, 69, Tabs Cobb Greatest of All” (shown below)
  • Ty Cobb “Reveals His Slump Remedy, Gives Other Tips” with three small photos of Cobb demonstrating his bunting technique
