1947-12-17 The Sporting News Baseball Magazine Contents

1947/12/17 — ITEM DESCRIPTION:
A few people have each time I’ve offered these, perhaps because of the outstanding condition, so for the sake of total clarity this is not a reprint but a totally original vintage issue of The Sporting News issued at the date in the title

Oversized, appx. 11-3/4″ X 16-1/2″ classic The Sporting News issue printed on newsprint. The image at the left is a cropped out portion of the cover (too large to fit the whole thing on my scanner!) and there are other images below from inside this issue. Classic Sporting News from when it was “The Baseball Paper of the World”!

There is just too much packed into each issue of The Sporting News to list it all, but I have paged through this entire issue and here are some of the highlights:

  • Cover cartoon by Willard Mullin “Prodigal Son Returns” features his classic Brooklyn Bum welcoming Leo Durocher back as manager of the Dodgers after the Lip had been banned for a season
  • Headline is “Majors’ Cold-Shoulder Burns Coasters — Crushed by Turndown at New York — Reichow Criticizes Rowland for Appearing in Photo After Snub by Majors”
  • “Looping the Loops” column by J.G. Taylor Spink covers Leo Durocher’s return to the Dodgers
  • “Shotton Third Pilot Ousted After Flag — Hornsby, McKechnie Relieved by Cardinals”
  • “Lippy to Work Under His Old $50,000 Pact — Shotton ‘Didn’t Expect to Manage Next Year;; Dodgers Confirm Six-Player Trade With Bucs”
  • “Majors Reject Coast Bid for Big Time Rating — National Favors 10-Club Idea, But A.L. Votes ‘No’ — Harridge Circuit 5-to-2 Against Adding Two Teams”
  • “Rookie Bob Hannegan Makes His Major League Bow — New Card President Working at Job as breadon Did–24 Hours a Day”
  • Jeff Heath
  • “One Title Already Won By Bucs — They’re Tops in N.L. Turnover — Believe They Got the Better of Big Dodger Deal, But Leave $100,000 Cash”
  • Johnny Beradino
  • Stan Spence
  • “Hatton to Outfield, Miller to Third, Reds’ Plan to Open Birth for Stallcup”
  • All-Star ballot for Catcher features photos with brief biographies for Bruce Edwards, Buddy Rosar, and Walker Cooper
  • “Clown Prince Al Schacht Opens Park Avenue Palace”
  • Full-page ad for Chesterfields on the back cover features huge image of Alan Hale as Santa Claus
  • Plus, believe it or not, a lot more!
  • 28 pages plus 8-page “The All-Sports News” section including cover story “Big Field in Race to Grab Louis’ Crown” with Mullin cartoon featuring #1 contender Joe Walcott, plus a full-page of photos of the Joe Louis vs. Jersey Joe Walcott at Madison Square Garden, plus stories about Lester Patrick to Hockey Hall of Fame, Chicago Stags Stan Miasek, Mullin cartoo of Coach of the Year Fritz Crisler, and more, 36 pages total.
