1947-01-08 The Sporting News Baseball Magazine Contents

1947/10/08 — ITEM DESCRIPTION:
A few people have each time I’ve offered these, perhaps because of the outstanding condition, so for the sake of total clarity this is not a reprint but a totally original vintage issue of The Sporting News issued at the date in the title

Oversized, appx. 11-3/4″ X 16-1/2″ classic The Sporting News issue printed on newsprint. The image at the left is a cropped out portion of the cover (too large to fit the whole thing on my scanner!) and there are other images below from inside this issue. Classic Sporting News from when it was “The Baseball Paper of the World”!

There is just too much packed into each issue of The Sporting News to list it all, but I have paged through this entire issue and here are some of the highlights:

  • Cover cartoon by Willard Mullin is “Baseball’s Burbank” featuring new Red Sox manager Joe McCarthy shaking hands with Tom Yawkee, past Yankees championships looming behind the pair
  • Headline is “Redbirds Dead? Not Even Sick, Says Sam — Card Talent Called Best in History — With $1,500,000 in the Till and Dyer Back, Owner Mocks Dire Threats”
  • Also on the cover at the bottom of the page “Bob Feller’s Barnstormers to Play in Mexico City”
  • “Frick Predicts 10-Year Dominance by National — Points to Wide Lead Over A.L. in Farm Titles — Declares Senior Loop Has Best Players Coming Up for Next Decade”
  • Marse Joe Wants Satisfaction of Beating Out Yankees: McCarthy Joins Bosox for Vindication” with two photos of Joe McCarthy and three articles beginning on this page.
  • World Series Coverage: Apparently this issue went to press with three games completed, some of that coverage follows.

  • “First Game: Branca’s Blowup Presents Opener to Bombers, 5-3” with article, box score
  • “Second Game: Bum’s Schoolboy Fielding Gives Yankees 2-0 Lead” with article, box score
  • Full page of World Series photos titled “Thrilling Scene, Top Actors in the Big Nickel Show” and includes a great shot of Jackie Robinson trapped between first and second
  • “Third Game: Dodgers Gain 6 to 0 Edge, Hang On to Win by 9 to 8” with article, box score
  • “Yankees Host to Ex-Stars of Own Club and League” with more than a half page containing four photos including names such as Wally Pipp, Home Run Baker, Roger Peckinpaugh, Babe Ruth in street clothes with uniformed Ty Cobb and Tris Speaker, and several other all-time greats in the other couple of shots
  • “Looping the Loops” article by J.G. Taylor Spink covers Joe Page of the New York Yankees
  • “No Rest for MacPhail; He Plans Early Deals — Couple of Backstops and Pitcher or Two to Be Offered; Players Salary Demands Expected to Be Higher; DiMaggio Likely to Ask at Least 50 Grand”

  • Johnny Mize “Signs for 1948, Gets a 51-Homer Man’s Salary”
  • Full-page ad for Chesterfields on the back cover features huge image of Joe DiMaggio, really great ad!
  • Plus, believe it or not, a lot more!
  • 40 pages plus 8-page “The Quarterback” section dedicated to football and including articles about “Choo Choo” Charlie Justice and a long Art Rooney feature that includes a large Amadee portrait of Rooney, 48 pages total.
