1947-07-30 The Sporting News Baseball Magazine Contents

1947/07/30 — ITEM DESCRIPTION: Oversized, appx. 11-3/4″ X 16-1/2″ classic The Sporting News issue printed on newsprint. The image at the left is a cropped out portion of the cover (too large to fit the whole thing on my scanner!) and there are other images below from inside this issue. Classic Sporting News from when it was “The Baseball Paper of the World”!

There is just too much packed into each issue of The Sporting News to list it all, but I have paged through this entire issue and here are some of the highlights:

  • Cover cartoon by Willard Mullin is “Brooklyn Bender” featuring his famed Brooklyn Bum
  • Headline is “Best Negro Players Already Taken–Veeck — Less Than Half Dozen Prospects – Indians’ President Believes More Colored Boys Now Will Take Up Game”. A little more from inside the text of this article: “Those scouts report that with Doby, Jackie Robinson, Willard Brown and Henry Thompson already under big league contracts, the cream of the colored crop has been taken. They say that fewer than six players worthy of consideration remain in the Negro leagues.” and Veeck’s reasoning behind his claims: “The reason white prospects outnumber colored prospects so overwhelmingly,” he explained, “is that so many more white boys for many years have played the game professionally. They had that big incentive.”
  • Charlie Grimm
  • Long article on Willard Marshall
  • “15 Stars Honored in Cooperstown Pilgrimage — Plaques to Old-Timers and Moderns Dedicated.” with photos of the plaques of the 11 “old-timers representing the period before 1920” who were chosen by special committee. Those 11 all have their plaques pictured and they are: Jack Chesbro, Joe Tinker, Rube Waddell, Frank Chance, Johnny Evers, Ed Walsh, Jesse Burkett, Joe McGinnity, Tom McCarthy, Eddie Plank, and Clark Griffith. The remaining four inductees were Frank Frisch, Carl Hubbell, Mickey Cochrane and Lefty Grove, who were all voted by the BBWAA.
  • “L.A. Shapes Rousing Campaign for Major Club” with artist’s conception of the Los Angeles Coliseum
  • “Yanks Count Chicks, Drool Over Visions of World’s Series Gravy — Big Problem Now Is to Get Chandler and Shea Back on Win Schedule”
  • “Tigers Lay Flag Lag to Hutch’s Lost Time — ‘See What We’ve Missed?’ Says O’Neill, After Big Freddy Halts Yankee Winning Streak”
  • “What’s Holding Bums Up? Maybe It’s Reiser’s Splints — Run-of-Mill Dodgers Keep on Surprising Experts and Own Followers”
  • Dutch Leonard
  • “Replay Ordered on Card Protest of Dodger Win — Frick Upholds Redbirds After Mixup by Umpire: Game Will Be Played Over as First Half of Twin Bill at Brooklyn, August 18; Northey’s Disputed Homer and Other Performances Go Into Records”
  • Jimmy Bloodworth
  • “Ted’s Batting Blaze Fails to Ignite Bosox” with small pic of Ted Williams
  • “Six Games Aint Nothin for Good Club to Make Up, Loyal Card Followers Yell”
  • Dale Mitchell
  • Ewell Blackwell
  • Bill Dietrich
  • Photo captioned “First Negro Teammates in Majors” shows Hank Thompson and Willard Brown
  • Full-page ad for Chesterfields on the back cover features huge image of Stan Musial
  • Plus, believe it or not, more!
  • 40 pages total.
