1947-04-23 The Sporting News Baseball Magazine Contents

1947/04/23 — ITEM DESCRIPTION: Oversized, appx. 11-3/4″ X 16-1/2″ classic The Sporting News issue printed on newsprint. The image at the left is a cropped out portion of the cover (too large to fit the whole thing on my scanner!) and there are other images below from inside this issue. Classic Sporting News from when it was “The Baseball Paper of the World”!

There is just too much packed into each issue of The Sporting News to list it all, but I have paged through this entire issue and here are some of the highlights beginning with two huge features:

It’s not on the cover, but only page 3, but the headline on that page is “Debut ‘Just Another Game’ to Jackie — Negro Star Did His Thinking Night Before; ‘Brooklyn Players Have Been Swell'” with three large pictures of Jackie Robinson. The issue highlighting the moment transcending baseball and making history! One full page of coverage continued onto the next page where it takes up about a quarter-page

But The Sporting News had been planning on this being a special issue anyway, dedicated to the man on the front cover, Babe Ruth! On the cover is a cartoon titled “Marvel of the Multitudes and Still the Champ!” by Amadee, and the small article “Ruth Ceremonies Will Be Broadcast at All Major and Big Minor Parks” but the real special part of the issue is advertised at the top banner– “Eight-page illustrated Life Story of Babe Ruth” which is inside towards the middle of the issue. Basically Ruth’s whole life and career are covered on these 8-pages, 3 full pages of which contain nothing but photos! The ultimate Babe Ruth tribute coming from 1947!

The rest of the issue obviously pales in comparison, but here are the highlights:
