1947-04-16 The Sporting News Baseball Magazine Contents

1947/04/16 — ITEM DESCRIPTION: Oversized, appx. 11-3/4″ X 16-1/2″ classic The Sporting News issue printed on newsprint. The image at the left is a cropped out portion of the cover (too large to fit the whole thing on my scanner!) and there are other images below from inside this issue. Classic Sporting News from when it was “The Baseball Paper of the World”!

There is just too much packed into each issue of The Sporting News to list it all, but I have paged through this entire issue and here are some of the highlights:

  • It’s not the headline, but the main story on the front cover is “Jackie Robinson Gets Chance With Flatbush Troupe — Likely to See Service Mostly as Pinch Runner” by Michael Gaven with a small photo of Jackie Robinson. The article begins as follows: “Brooklyn, for the first time in its 72 years in the National League, will have a Negro player within its ranks this season. All doubt of Jackie Robinson’s status was removed at 3:15 pm, April 10, when Branch Rickey announced ‘The Brooklyn Dodgers today purchased the contract of Jackie Roosevelt Robinson from the Montreal Royals” Further into the article regarding Branch Rickey: “No man ever had greater faith in the ability of a ball player. We believe that it was Branch’s honest opinion that the Brooklyn players would come rushing to him and shout” ‘Let’s have that fellow. He can win the pennant for us.’ To put it mildly, it didn’t happen that way. However, a quiet poll conducted by the Flatbush Secret Service revealed that no one would quit the club if Robinson were made a member.” Truly a bit of history!
  • The rest of the issue obviously pales in comparison, but here are the highlights:

  • Headline on the cover is “Chandler Rolls Up Sleeves for New Swings — Lips Feels First Punch; Other Targets Rumored — Commissioner Said to Be Gunning for One Individual in Particular; Believes Efforts to Run Game With Kindly Hand Were Misconstrued” with large photo of Leo Durocher on the cover
  • “Redbirds, Red Sox Rated Repeaters — Buc Climb to Second Predicted” by J.G. Taylor Spink
  • “Confident Cards Face Easier Victory — But Bosox Can’t Rely on Breeze” with brief previews of each club
  • “Lippy Listens in Saddened Silence to Chandler’s Long Sentence” with article from cover continued plus “Sad Saga of Game’s No. 1 Bad Boy — Lip’s 20-Year Major Career Dotted by Flare-Ups — Challenged Ruth, Cobb as Rookie With Yankees”
  • Next page: “Leo, Given Sympathy of His Players, Makes Farewell Talk to Great Bunch — Suspension of Pilot Comes as Stunning Surprise to Members of Team”
  • Willard Mullin cartoon “Down at the Heel” features Joe DiMaggio
  • “Bobo Newsom Blasts Inflated Salaries of Stars — Says Greenberg Will Get 110 Grand–But No Guy Is Worth That Much”
